2010 Yearbook - Universidad ORT Uruguay

3 Universidad ORT Uruguay FROM RECTOR am writing to share a summary of our university’s main activities during 2010. Inevitably, not all of the valuable initiatives and contributions of our growing academic community can be included, but I trust that this brief summary will allow you to appreciate the quality and diversity of our institutional life. In 2010, for the sixth consecutive year, Universidad ORT Uruguay recognized among the top 500 in the world and among the top ten in Latin America in the World University Rankings produced by QS World University Rankings. The School of Business and Social Sciences was once again ranked among the top 35 in Latin America in the annual ranking by América Economía magazine. A faculty member from our university, Dr. Fernando Paganini, was awarded the 2010 Scopus Uruguay Prize for his outstanding scholarly work. The academic journal Letras Internacionales, published by the Faculty of Administration and Social Sciences, celebrated the publication of its 100th issue in August. Over the course of these 100 issues, more than 350 original articles were published by academics, specialists, and professionals in the field—both from Uruguay and abroad—as well as students in the Bachelor’s Degree in International Studies. In 2010, we launched the Bachelor’s Degree in Biotechnology, the first university program in this discipline in our country, as well as the post-secondary Biotechnology Technician program, with the support of the National Agency for Innovation and Research (ANII). We also launched the first Bachelor’s degree in Animation and Video Games, as part of an agreement with the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), one of the world’s most prestigious universities in the visual and performing arts. During 2010, more than 1,000 new professionals and technicians graduated from our university. We continued to expand our network of international academic partnerships, signing nine new agreements with universities in eight countries; 55 international students took courses at ORT, and 55 ORT students studied abroad. At a time when our entire society is concerned with the education system as an essential component for the country’s development, we reaffirm our commitment to continue making every effort to contribute to the training of the professionals and technicians our country needs, as well as to the production of knowledge useful for national priorities.
