42 2011 Institutional Yearbook: Sustainable Financial Management of Universities in Latin America (SUMA) The objective of the SUMA project—Towards Sustainable Financial Management of Universities in Latin America—is to share experiences and models in order to develop strategies that will improve the financial management of universities in each participating country. Participating universities include institutions from Germany, Austria, Spain, and Italy in Europe, and Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, El Salvador, Uruguay, and Venezuela in Latin America. Project Leader: Enrique Topolansky, Coordinator of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Funding: European Commission through the ALFA III program. Duration: 36 months. PROJECTS INITIATED IN 2011 School of Engineering New Approaches to Improving Anti-infective Drugs The objective of this project is to use enzymatic technology techniques for the in vitro production of polyketides. Principal Investigator: Lorena Betancor, Professor and Researcher in Biotechnology, School of Engineering. Funding: Basic Sciences Development Program (PEDECIBA) Duration: three months Robotics Programming for Teachers The objective of this project is to integrate Educational Robotics into the Ceibal Plan by training secondary school computer science teachers in Robotics Programming. Principal Investigators: Inés Kereki, Professor of Programming, School of Engineering, and André Fonseca, Professor of Analog Electronics and Automatic Control, School of Engineering. Funding: Center for Technological and Social Inclusion (CITS), Plan Ceibal Duration: 14 months Development of Chromatographic Methods The objective of this project is to develop a method for the purification and quantification of toxic proteins used in the formulation of veterinary vaccines. Principal Investigator: Carlos Sanguinetti, Academic Coordinator of Biotechnology, School of Engineering. Funding: National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII) and Santa Elena Laboratories Duration: 24 months
