48 2011 Yearbook Department of Jewish Studies Roundtable Discussion: "Remembering Through the Lens: Teaching Traumatic Events of the Past Through Photography" The Department of Jewish Studies and the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguay, together with the Human Rights Directorate of the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC) and the Regional Teachers’ Center (CERP) of the Southwest, organized the roundtable “Remembering Through the Lens: Teaching Traumatic Events of the Past Through Photography.” The event took place on August 15 at the CERP of the Southwest in the department of Colonia, where all its students participated, and on August 17 at the university, where students from the Artigas Teachers’ Institute (IPA) participated. The Municipal Photography Center of Montevideo and the MEC Center of Colonia also participated. Participants in the roundtable included Prof. Aialá Wengrowicz Feller, Coordinator of the Visual Archive and professor at the Massuah Institute for Holocaust Studies in Israel; Daniel Sosa, Coordinator of the Municipal Photography Center of Montevideo; Prof. Ademar Cordones, Director of CERP del Suroeste; and Prof. Adriana Careaga, instructor for the Master’s in Educational Management at the Institute of Education of Universidad ORT Uruguay. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES 2011 School of Engineering Camino TICs The Camino TICs Project offers full scholarships for short-term programs in the field of Information Technology. Its goal is to enable young people who have dropped out of the formal education system to continue their studies and subsequently enter a field with high employment potential. It is a project funded by the European Union and implemented by Universidad ORT Uruguay the participation of partner institutions such as the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI) and the Rotary Club of Aguada, District 4970. In 2011, 170 interested applicants took an Academic Aptitude Test, from which 37 young people were selected. "Scratch Day - Universidad ORT Uruguay" On May 20, the School of Engineering and the Institute of Education organized the "Scratch Day" event for secondary school teachers, which consisted of presentations on examples of how to use the Scratch program. The activity was led by Dr. Inés Kereki, Professor of Programming at the Faculty of Engineering, and Mag. Gabriela Bernasconi, professor and thesis advisor for the Master’s in Educational Management at the Institute of Education. Forty teachers from Montevideo, Canelones, Florida, Rocha, and Salto participated in the event. Scratch is a programming language developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
