71 OUTREACH ACTIVITIES 2015 Girls in ICT Day To promote women’s participation in technology-related careers, “Girls in ICT Day” took place on April 23, an initiative of the International Telecommunication Union. The event was organized by Antel, the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI), Greentizen, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), LATU/Espacio Ciencia, the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining, Plan Ceibal, and Universidad ORT Uruguay. More than 300 female students from 9th to 12th grade participated. The School of Engineering organized three workshops: “Design Your Own Apps,” led by Dr. Inés Kereki, professor of Programming; “If you had a robot, what would you ask it to do?”, led by André Fonseca, Ph.D., professor of Analog Electronics; and “Would you like to try virtual reality?”, led by Luis Calabria, Ph.D., assistant coordinator of the Simulation and Video Games Laboratory. Project Fair at the School of Engineering On March 10, a Project Fair was held at the School of Engineering, aimed at students in the Programmer Analyst, Information Technology Analyst, Bachelor of Systems, and Systems Engineering programs. Students chose from more than 20 proposals with academic or research value to develop in their final-year projects. For participating companies, such as SOS Children’s Villages and CPA Ferrere, this is an activity that allows them to engage students with their proposals and recruit talent. Scratch Day 2015 The Faculty of Engineering and Plan Ceibal organized two workshops for teachers on May 7 and 8 as part of the Scratch Day 2015 event. On May 7, an advanced Scratch 2.0 workshop was held at the Faculty of Engineering, and on May 8, a basic workshop for teachers took place at Liceo 2 in Maldonado. Forty-six teachers from Montevideo, Canelones, and Maldonado participated. Scratch is a programming language developed by the MIT Media Lab that allows users to create animations and games.
