8 2015 Yearbook INSTITUTIONAL NEWS 2015 New building dedicated to study and research in the field of biotechnology In March 2015, the School of Engineering inaugurated a new building located at 1237 Mercedes Street, which houses five biotechnology laboratories. In this space, students in the Biotechnology Engineering and Bachelor’s in Biotechnology programs work specifically on the production, quantification, and analysis of biological molecules, as well as advanced techniques in molecular biology, cell biology, recombinant DNA technology, plant molecular biology, microbiology, enzymology, and nanotechnology, among others. Visit by Dr. Dan Shechtman, 2011 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry On November 24, 2015, Dr. Dan Shechtman, chairman of the Academic Advisory Board of World ORT and professor of Materials Science at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2011, visited the university. He delivered a lecture titled “Challenges in Materials Engineering” and spoke at a meeting with biotechnology students about his discovery of the icosahedral phase in rapidly solidified aluminum alloy crystals.
