9 Inauguration of the Center for Australian Studies On November 24, 2016, the inauguration of the Center for Australian Studies at Universidad ORT Uruguay took place on the Pocitos Campus. This academic center for the study of Australia’s history, politics, economy, business, society, education, and culture—the first of its kind in Latin America—aims to strengthen ties between Australia and the region, particularly with Uruguay. Speakers included the Australian Ambassador to Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, Noel Campbell; the Commercial Minister-Counselor of the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, Shannon Powell; the Minister of Industry, Energy, and Mining, Carolina Cosse; the Academic Vice-Rector of Universidad ORT Uruguay, Julio Fernández; the Director of the Deakin University English Language Institute, Prof. Ben Stubbs; the Executive Director of Petrel Energy, David Casey; and the Director of the Regional Directorate for Asia, Africa, and Oceania at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Alberto Fajardo.
