114 2018 Yearbook Gonzalo Mesorio, a graduate in Systems Engineering; Mónica Mesorio, a graduate in Public Accounting; Milton Rodríguez, a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Systems; along with Sebastián Pereira. The MiCheque startup, supported by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, was named the best fintech startup in Uruguay in the Open Talent competition organized by BBVA. August. MiCheque was also named Startup of the Year at the Uruguayan Technology Industry Awards, presented since 2014 by the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI). December. Erienne Jackson, associate professor of Protein Technology. She received the award for best oral presentation at the III Latin American Symposium on Biocatalysis and Biotransformations for the presentation of her paper “Crude glycerol transformation with immobilized G. oxydans in agar,” co-authored with Magdalena Ripoll, a graduate in Biotechnology Engineering, and Dr. Lorena Betancor, professor of Protein Technology at the faculty. San Luis, Argentina. November. Lorena Betancor, professor of Protein Technology, and Fernando Paganini, professor of Telecommunications Theory. They received the Science Award granted by the Directorate for the Development of Science and Knowledge of the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC). December. André Fonseca, professor of Analog Electronics and Automatic Control. His doctoral thesis “Error Propagation in Quantum Circuits and Isotropy” was recognized with the 2016-17 Extraordinary Doctoral Award from the Polytechnic University of Madrid. December. Andrés Martínez and Renato Moraes, Systems Engineering students. Their project “Graphical Migration of a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) System,” carried out under the supervision of Engineer José Szyman, won first prize in the Computing category of the Undergraduate and Graduate Project Competition of the National Academy of Engineering of Uruguay. Meanwhile, the project “Improvements in the Upstream Processing of Clostridial Antigens,” by Belén Álamo and Pía Fernández, students in the Bachelor’s Degree in Biotechnology program, supervised by Dr. Rodrigo Achigar and Dr. Lorena Betancor, won first prize in the Biotechnology Thesis category.
