66 2019 Yearbook: Vipi, Smart Assistant for People with Diabetes Authors: Juan Pablo Delprato, Emiliano Gnocchi, Andrés Rath, and Diego Rocca Organization: ViperMed The goal of this project was to create an app to help people with diabetes manage their condition from the moment they are diagnosed, providing guidance on nutrition and monitoring. The idea was proposed by ViperMed, a company dedicated to educating patients with chronic diseases through the use of technological solutions. This app provides users with nutritional data, recipes, information about the disease, and the ability to log blood glucose readings, among other features. In the initial phase, the team conducted research on the topic, interviewing specialists in various key areas of diabetes and people with diabetes to gain insight into the perspectives of potential end users. This app is available on Android and iOS platforms, for which native development was performed to ensure a better user experience. The backend consists of several services developed in Node.js, communicating via HTTP. The system utilizes the functionalities of various APIs (Application Programming Interfaces), including IBM Watson: Discovery and IBM Watson: Assistant for cognitive information analysis and user conversation, respectively, and the Spoonacular API for managing dietary information. The project was developed using the Scrum agile methodology.
