8 2020 Yearbook INSTITUTIONAL NEWS 2020 ORT University ranked first in Uruguay, according to QS Universidad ORT Uruguay ranked among the top 500 universities in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2021, published in June by the British consulting firm QS Quacquarelli Symonds. In this edition, only two Uruguayan universities were included among the top 500 globally, and the highest-ranked was Universidad ORT Uruguay. The top spot in the ranking is held by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States, followed by Stanford University and Harvard University. A Uruguayan university entered the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings for the first time. In July, Uruguay entered the list of Latin American universities ranked in the Times Higher Education Latin America University Rankings through Universidad ORT Uruguay. This is the first time a Uruguayan university has been included in this ranking. ORT is ranked 103rd and is among the top 15 universities in the region in terms of International Outlook. This time, the ranking is led by the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. ORT was selected as a model organization by the Mercury Project, funded by the United Nations. Universidad ORT Uruguay recommendations from the Mercury Project URU/13/G32, of the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Facility, regarding its environmental and waste management. From the perspective of the Mercury Project—“Environmentally Sound Management of the Life Cycle of Mercury-Containing Products and Their Waste”—it is noted that at Universidad ORT Uruguay , “steps Universidad ORT Uruguay taken toward environmentally sound and committed management, and that the institution aims to go even further, inviting members of its educational community to become advocates of good environmental practices.”
