88 2013 Yearbook Marcelo Lanfranconi Graduate in Systems Engineering. His startup, Paganza—developed in collaboration with Leonardo Vernazza, an engineer, and supported by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship—won first prize in the “New Banking” category of the BBVA Open Talent Competition. The company offers a solution for monthly utility bill payments via smartphones. June. Furthermore, the Paganza startup won first prize at AppCircus, a local app competition organized by the production company Lucero. November. It was also selected as the third most innovative startup in the Emprendo competition, organized by the newspaper El Observador. December. Ernesto Copello Graduate of the Master’s in Engineering (Research Track). His thesis, “Session Type Inference,” won first place in the “2013 Latin American Master’s Thesis Competition,” an annual event held as part of the Latin American Conference on Informatics (CLEI). The thesis advisors were Dr. Álvaro Tasistro, Academic Coordinator of the Master’s program, and Dr. Nora Szasz, Academic Coordinator of Systems Engineering. July. Manuel Bravo, a student in the Bachelor’s program in Systems, along with Matías López, Santiago Rosa, and Christian Zurbrigg, students in the Programmer Analyst program at the CTC Center in Colonia, and Lucas Díaz, a student at Liceo Departamental No. 1 in Colonia. They were the winners of the “IEEE SEK” (Standard Education Kits) category in the Latin American “XII LARC American Robotics Competition” held in Arequipa, Peru. October. Previously, they had won first place in the “SUMO.Uy Robotics Competition” organized by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Republic. September. Krikor Attarian and Estéfano Zammarelli, graduates of the Bachelor’s in Systems program; Marcelo Lanfranconi, graduate of the Systems Engineering program; and Marcelo Duarte, graduate of the Software Analyst program. Attarian and Zammarelli’s Kizanaro startup won the 2013 Nova Award in the “Services” category. Lanfranconi’s Paganza startup, developed in collaboration with Leonardo Vernazza, supported by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, won the 2013 Nova Award in the “Startups” category. The HPS Gaming startup, by Duarte and Pablo Baldi, received the 2013 Nova Award in the “ICTs” category. The Nova Awards, organized by the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII), recognize companies that, through their innovative capacity, contribute to improving the quality of life and economic progress of the country.
