66 2014 Yearbook Camino TICs The Camino TICs project offers full scholarships for technical degree programs in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). Its goal is to provide young people from low-income households with a solid technical education, enabling them to enter the workforce in a sector with high employment potential. In 2014, eleven candidates applied, of whom eight were selected. In its early stages, this program received funding from the European Union. Currently, the support network consists of the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI), the Rotary Club of Aguada, and Universidad ORT Uruguay. The project is 50% funded by the university’s student scholarship program, and the other 50% by the following companies: Bantotal, CSI Ingenieros, Equipo, Fundación Itaú, Gallito.com, Montevideo Shopping, and Unión Capital AFAP. Girls in ICT Day To promote women’s participation in technology-related careers, “Girls in ICT Day” took place on April 23, an initiative of the International Telecommunication Union. The event was organized by Antel, the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI), Greentizen, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), LATU/Espacio Ciencia, the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining / National Directorate of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Communication Services, the Ceibal Plan, and Universidad ORT Uruguay. It included panels, talks, and workshops, in which more than 300 female students from the 9th to 11th grades participated. The School of Engineering organized a Scratch workshop led by Dr. Inés Kereki, a professor of Programming at the school, and a talk on video games given by Germán Canuti and Sebastián Ruíz Díaz, assistants at the 3D Prototyping Lab. For its part, the Simulation and Video Games Department set up booths showcasing video game projects. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES 2014
