They achieved a score in the top 6% of the regional finals of the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) International Programming Contest, held in Buenos Aires. November. Martín Monteiro, coordinator of the Physics Laboratory. The article “Exploring phase space using smartphone acceleration and rotation sensors simultaneously,” published in the European Journal of Physics, co-authored by Prof. Monteiro, ranked among the five most downloaded Uruguayan articles from IOP Publishing via the Timbó portal. April. Alejandro Lozdziejski, Systems Engineering graduate. His company Sur 3D, incubated by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, was the winner in the Innovative Entrepreneurship category at the NOVA Award—National Innovation Award, organized by the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII). October. Una Escuela Sustentable was the winner in the Social Impact Innovation category; this school houses a microalgae bioreactor developed by Verónica Braida, Pía Campot, Eliana Nervi, and Carolina Tartaglia, graduates of the Biotechnology Engineering program. October. Pedidos Ya!, a company founded by Ariel Burschtin, a graduate of the Systems Engineering program; Álvaro García, a graduate of the Bachelor’s in Systems program; and Ruben Sosenke, a graduate of the Information Technology Analyst program, received a special award for its track record and constant innovation. October. Mario Fernández, dean of the School of Engineering. He received recognition for having served 25 years as a member of the Uruguayan Engineers Association as part of the celebration of the organization’s 111th anniversary and Engineers’ Day. October. Lorena Betancor, research professor at the Biotechnology Laboratory. She was promoted to Grade 4 Researcher in the Chemistry area of Pedeciba (Basic Sciences Development Program). November. She was also appointed to the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal Mayfeb Journal of Materials Science. April. Luis Calabria and Federico Márquez, graduates of Systems Engineering, along with Nicolás Bermúdez and Gabriel Lambach. Their startup SimDesign, incubated by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, was recognized as an Innovative Company by the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI). December. Andrés Levin and Ignacio Valle, graduates of Systems Engineering. Their startup Qoollet received a special mention in the Emprendo 2016 competition, an event organized by El Observador that recognizes the most innovative startups of the year. December. Andrés Ferragut, associate professor in the Data Networks area. He was appointed associate editor of the journal IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking by its editorial board and the editor-in-chief.
