68 2016 Yearbook, School of Engineering Optimal Load Flow for the Integration of Renewable Energy This project aims to develop a software prototype to optimize energy flow in smart grids with significant renewable energy generation. It is being led by the school’s Applied Mathematics for Telecommunications and Energy (MATE) group. The project integrates the work of the MATE group with graduates who previously participated in the group, such as Dr. Enrique Mallada, a telecommunications engineer currently working at Johns Hopkins University (United States), and with Dr. Stephen Low’s group at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The project was awarded through the MIEM-IDB call for proposals to engage the qualified Uruguayan diaspora. Project Leader: Fernando Paganini Funding: Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining (MIEM) and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Duration: seven months Ibero-American Scholarships - Young Professionals and Researchers - Santander 2016 As part of the "Ibero-American Scholarships. Young Professors and Researchers. Santander Universities," Banco Santander awarded a scholarship to Florencia Pirotti, a teaching assistant in Biotechnology, who undertook a research stay in Dr. Valeria Grazú’s group at the University of Zaragoza, where she worked on the development of a biosensor based on gold nanoparticles, in collaboration with Dr. Lorena Betancor, a biotechnology researcher at the university.
