70 2019 Yearbook Girls in ICT Day To promote women’s participation in technology careers, Girls in ICT Day took place on April 25, a global initiative led by the International Telecommunication Union. As part of this initiative, the School of Engineering organized three workshops: “Design Your Own Apps,” led by Dr. Inés Kereki, professor of Programming; “Control Your Own Robot,” led by Eng. Mariana Derderian, associate academic coordinator of Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, and Electrical Engineering; and “What Is a Chatbot?,” led by IBM Uruguay. Participants included 11th-grade students from the English School, José Pedro Varela School and High School, the Hebrew-Uruguayan Comprehensive School, and Elbio Fernández School and High School. Scratch Day 2019 The School of Engineering and Plan Ceibal organized Scratch Day 2019 on May 17, an event the school has been holding since 2009. As part of the event, Dr. Inés Kereki, a professor of Programming at the faculty, led a workshop for teachers on Scratch 3.0 and Augmented Reality. Twenty-eight teachers from Montevideo and various departments in the interior of the country participated. Scratch is a programming language developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that allows users to create animations and games. OUTREACH ACTIVITIES 2019
