72 2020 Yearbook 2020 OUTREACH ACTIVITIES Girls in ICT Day To promote women’s participation in technology careers, Girls in ICT Day took place on April 23. This global initiative is sponsored by the International Telecommunication Union. As part of this initiative, the School of Engineering organized an online programming activity involving robots, aimed at 11th and 12th-grade high school students. The activity, led by André Fonseca, academic coordinator of the Electronics, Electrical, and Telecommunications Engineering program, and Mariana Derderian, associate academic coordinator of the program, challenged the teenage girls to program and simulate the construction of a robot using the Open Roberta application, available to the public on Google. Scratch Day 2020 On May 22, the School of Engineering and Plan Ceibal organized Scratch Day 2020, an event the school has been holding since 2009. In this context, Dr. Inés Kereki, a professor of Programming at the faculty, led the workshop for teachers titled “Applied Computational Thinking: Developing a Game.” Twenty elementary and secondary school teachers participated. Scratch is a programming language developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that allows users to create animations and games. 15th ICT Job Fair On October 20, the Graduate Coordination Office of the School of Engineering organized the 15th Information Technology Job Fair, designated as an event of interest by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security. Adapting to the context created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty decided to hold the event in a virtual format using a platform where each company or organization had a 3D booth, in which job opportunities were shared and videos of each company were shown. The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Dr. Pablo Mieres, and the president of the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI), Leonardo Loureiro, participated in the opening ceremony. The fair drew a total of more than 750 attendees and featured 37 companies and organizations, including Advice, Afap Sura, Anda, Arnaldo Castro, BBVA, BASF, D-local, El País, Endeavor, Experis - Manpower Group, Fábricas Nacionales de Cerveza, Farmashop, Infocorp, Light It, Pedidos Ya!, República AFAP, Tata Consultancy Services, and Ta–Ta/Woow.
