The Sustainable Development Monitor (SDM), created by the Deloitte Chair in Management and Accounting for Sustainable Development at the School of Administration and Social Sciences of Universidad ORT Uruguay collaboration with DERES, won the Uruguay Sustainable National Environment Award in the Educational Institutions category.

Dr. Nicolás Gambetta, academic coordinator of the graduate programs in Accounting and Taxation and coordinator of the Sustainable Development Monitor project, received the award from the President of the Republic, Dr. Luis Lacalle Pou.

“The MDS provides companies with 17 indicators that measure their impact across three dimensions—environmental, social, and economic/governance—to assess their progress toward sustainability,” Gambetta said as he accepted the award.

"It's a great tool for companies to use to assess where they're starting from and where they want to go."

“Our goal is for as many companies in the country as possible to use the MDS, since it has an impact on the entire value chain; the more sustainable companies are, the more positive externalities are generated for the entire community and the environment,” added Gambetta.

“The MDS is a clear example of a contribution to the‘SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals.’ Because the Monitor brings together academia, professionals, businesses, and now the public sector, helping to recognize and raise awareness of these types of projects,” he concluded.

The purpose of the award is “to recognize initiatives that promote sustainability as a means of mitigating current environmental problems, as well as to promote best practices and raise environmental awareness, in order to make a difference today and leave a better environment for future generations,” according to the Ministry’s website.

The award ceremony took place on Sunday, June 12, at the Expo Uruguay Sostenible, held at the Montevideo Velodrome. Also present at the ceremony were Daniel Peña, Minister of the Environment; Julio Fernández, Vice Rector of ORT; Mariella de Aurrecoechea, Director of Strategy and Innovation and Leader of Climate Change and Sustainability at Deloitte Spanish Latin America; Oscar Sagasti, President of DERES; and Felipe Cat, Director of DERES.
