Lecture: “The Jewish Calendar: Tradition and Evolution of a Civilization. Shavuot”

On May 28, 2012, ORT Pocitos hosted the lecture “The Jewish Calendar: Tradition and Evolution of a Civilization. Shavuot,” presented by Rafael Winter, a professor in the Jewish Studies Department at the Escuela Integral Hebreo Uruguaya-Instituto Ariel Hebreo Uruguayo. He discussed the significance of the festival of Shavuot (Feast of Firstfruits) within the context of the festivals and commemorations of the Jewish calendar; its multiple meanings for the Jewish people and its universal message. The event was organized by the Department of Jewish Studies.

Prof. Winter holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Judaism from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with a specialization in Jewish Education for the Diaspora from the university’s Melton Center. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in History. He is a columnist for the Semanario Hebreo and the monthly magazine Identidad. He serves as vice president of the Montevideo Holocaust Memorial Center. He is a member of the Press and Public Relations Commission of the Central Israeli Committee of Uruguay and a member of the Jewish-Christian Fellowship of Uruguay.
