Academic event: “65th Anniversary of the United Nations Resolution Ending the British Mandate in the Holy Land”

On November 26, 2012, the academic event “65th Anniversary of the United Nations Resolution Ending the British Mandate in the Holy Land” took place at ORT Pocitos, featuring Prof. Rodolfo Fattoruso, Dr. Raúl Iturría, Eng. Martín Ponce de León, and Dr. Julio María Sanguinetti. It consisted of a roundtable discussion organized to mark the 65th anniversary of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181, which led to the establishment of the State of Israel. It was organized by the Central Israeli Committee of Uruguay and the Department of Jewish Studies.

Prof. Fattoruso moderated the panel. He is a literary critic and director of Artemisa Ediciones. He has served as a theater and film critic, editorial writer, and managing editor for the newspaper El Día, as well as an editorial writer for the newspapers La Mañana and Últimas Noticias. He served as Director of the National Book Institute, Director of News at Televisión Nacional de Uruguay, and Co-director of the Uruguayan Classics Collection of the Ministry of Education and Culture. He was a board member of the Uruguay-Israel Cultural Institute

Dr. Iturria is an attorney specializing in administrative law from the Complutense University of Madrid. He served as Mayor of the Department of Durazno (1972–1976 and 1990–1995). He was a Senator of the Republic (1995–2000), Minister of the Interior (1993–1994), and Minister of National Defense (1995–1998).

Mr. Ponce de León is an Electrical Industrial Engineer. He served as Director of Public Works (1990–1992), Director of Environmental Planning (1992–1995), and Director General of Environmental Development (1995–1996) for the Municipality of Montevideo. He served as National Representative for Montevideo (2000–2005). He was Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry, Energy, and Mining (2005–2008) and President of OSE (State Sanitation Works) (2008–2010).

Dr. Sanguinetti is a lawyer and journalist. He served as a National Representative for Montevideo (1963–1967 and 1968–1971). He served as Minister of Industry and Commerce (1969–1971) and Minister of Education and Culture (1972). He was President of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay (1985–1990 and 1995–2000). He served as a Senator of the Republic (2005–2010).
