Publication of the "ORT 2014–2015 Calendar" dedicated to the Dreyfus Affair

September 29, 2014
In September 2014, the university published the "Ioman ORT 5775" (ORT Calendar 2014–2015), an annual publication produced by the General Directorate, the Department of Jewish Studies, and the Publications Department. This year’s feature article is dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the Dreyfus affair. The text was written by Roberto Cyjon, former president of the Central Israeli Committee of Uruguay (2012–2014).

"The Dreyfus Affair in 19th-century France deserves to be reexamined as a historical event in its own right, given the particular characteristics of its uniqueness. It is even worth revisiting to understand a long-term history reaching back into the past, which could shed light on how we arrived at that point. Likewise, it is a fascinating story with a long-term impact extending into the future, given the far-reaching consequences the case generated.

It is essential to situate oneself within the context of the era to approach the complex multiplicity of new paradigms that had to be resolved—or inevitably grappled with—in that 19th century, so closely linked and inseparable from both the 18th and the 20th. The Dreyfus Affair is thus simultaneously a consequence and a cause of the condensation of previous and subsequent revolutions, in constant force and demanding hermeneutic interpretation. The figure transcends that of a Jewish captain in the French army, falsely accused of a spy plot. It simmers in a putrid, bubbling cauldron of anti-Semitism, already millennia-old at that time. At the same time, it encompasses the “problematizations” of a new world emerging from the Enlightenment and the French Revolution, which were omnipresent in the preceding century,” the author states at the beginning of the article.

Cyjon holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technion Institute in Israel. He served as President of the Central Council for Jewish Education (1995–1998) and President of the Zionist Organization of Uruguay (2003–2006).

He is co-editor of the books: "Zionism a Hundred Years After Herzl," Zionist Organization of Uruguay and Artemisa Publishing (2004); and "Jerusalem, 19 Years of the Prize, 19 Speeches," Zionist Organization of Uruguay and Fin de Siglo Editores (2009).

He is a fiction writer, having published the following books: "Of Legends and Cliffs," Melibea Publishing (1999); "Damn It," Nautilus Rey Publishing (2001); "Flaco, I’m Getting My Passport," Artemisa Publishing (2003); "Marked Forever," Ediciones de la Banda Oriental (2006); and "The Truth Is Always Elusive," Dedos Publishing (2013).
