Dr. Gatto served as a National Representative for Montevideo for the People’s Government Party from 1990 to 1995. He is the author of the book *El cielo por asalto*. The National Liberation Movement (Tupamaros) and the Uruguayan Left (1963–1972)(Alfaguara, 2004), and co-author of the books Parliamentarism and Presidentialism in Uruguay (Fundación de Cultura Universitaria, 1993); Political Reform ( Fundación de Cultura Universitaria, 1993); Co-governance and Coalition: 164 Years of Agreement Between the Blancos and the Colorados (Arca, 2000); and Reflections on the New Anti-Semitism (Central Israeli Committee of Uruguay, 2003).
Author of numerous articles on political and cultural topics in Uruguayan media (Cuadernos de Marcha, Zeta, Relaciones, Posdata, Búsqueda, and Voces). He is currently a columnist for the Montevideo newspaper El País.
He is a member of the Philosophical Circle of Uruguay. In 2009, he received the Award for Freedom of Thought from the Grand Lodge of Freemasonry of Uruguay, and in 2010, the Ariel and Washington Beltrán Award for written journalism.
