May 6, 2015
On May 14, 2015, a screening of the film *The Scrolls of Hope* (United States, 2011), directed by Daniel Cohen and executive produced by Tom Hanks, took place at the university’s Pocitos campus. The event was organized by the Uruguayan Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Department of Jewish Studies.
The film tells the story of Ilán Ramón, NASA’s first and only Israeli astronaut, an Air Force pilot, and a national hero of Israel, and his relationship with Prof. Joachim “Yoya” Josef, a world-renowned scientist and Jewish Holocaust survivor from the Bergen-Belsen extermination camp. A small Torah scroll would bind the destinies of these two exceptional figures.

Ilan Ramon was one of the crew members of the space shuttle Columbia, which exploded in space on February 1, 2003.
