ESPACIO ORT at the 16th Punta del Este Jewish Film Festival

The festival is a cultural event focused on art and entertainment that aims to explore the identity of the Jewish people through film.

Universidad ORT Uruguay its program as part of the 16th edition of the Punta del Este Jewish Film Festival, which took place at the Enjoy Punta del Este Hotel (formerly the Conrad) from February 3 to 6, 2019.

As part of the event, the Municipality of Punta del Este and the Punta del Este Jewish Film Festival paid tribute to Prof. Charlotte de Grünberg.

Among other activities, on Sunday, February 3, at ESPACIO ORT, the book *Chinese and Jews: Bridges and Encounters Between Two Millennia-Old Civilizations*, by Dr. Gustavo Perednik, visiting professor at Universidad ORT Uruguay, was launched. The presentation was led by Diego Fischer and attended by the author. In addition, a lecture titled “Israel and the Jewish Diaspora. Unity or Conflict of Identities?” by Dr. Alberto Spektorowski, professor of Political Theory and Comparative Politics at Tel Aviv and Columbia Universities, who was invited under the auspices of the Israel Institute. Furthermore, the opening of the exhibition “Caryatid Women and the Mar and Artist” by Liliana Livneh took place. 

On Monday, the 4th , the book *The Shoah: An Unresolved Phenomenon. National Socialism, the Shoah, History, and Memory: Reflections by Intellectuals and Historiographical Debates* by Roberto Cyjon, a visiting professor at Universidad ORT Uruguay former president of the Central Jewish Committee of Uruguay, was presented by Dr. Spektorowski, with the author in attendance. For his part, Dr. Perednik delivered the lecture “Amos Oz: Literature and Ideals.”

In addition, on Tuesday, the 5th, the following lectures were held: “The Shoah, a Devastating Delusion: The Deep-Seated Factors That Exacerbated Anti-Semitism,” presented by Mr. Cyjon, and “The Turbulence of the Liberal World and the Resurgence of Populism: What Should We Do as Jews and as Zionists?,” presented by Dr. Spektorowski.

To conclude the ESPACIO ORT program, a roundtable discussion titled “Claude Lanzmann: Testimony as Essence” was held on Wednesday, the 6th, in the Cinema Café at the Punta del Este Resort & Spa (formerly Mantra). The discussion featured Alfredo Friedlander, Graciela Jinich, and Gustavo Perednik, and included remarks by Marie Rivalland of the Cultural Cooperation and Action Service at the French Embassy in Uruguay.

Following the closure of Espacio ORT, a book presentation for *The Disappearance of Josef Mengele* by Olivier Guez took place on Thursday, the 7th, in the Caribe Room of the Enjoy Punta del Este Hotel (formerly the Conrad). Guez is a prominent French journalist, writer, and researcher who contributes to publications such as *Le Monde* and *The New York Times*. He co-wrote the screenplay for the German film *Secret Agenda*.

Admission to all events was free.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3

Opening of the exhibition “Caryatid Women and the Mar and Artist” by Liliana Livneh. The artist will present the exhibition, which will remain on view at Espacio ORT. Livneh is the creator of the logo for the Peres Center for Peace at the Shimon Peres Chair at the University of Anahuac in Mexico City. Her studio is located in Tel Aviv, where she resides.

Book presentation : *Chinese and Jews: Bridges and Encounters Between Two Millennia-Old Civilizations* by Gustavo Perednik. The presentation will be led by Diego Fischer and will feature the author. Fischer is the author of numerous books. He won the Libro de Oro Award in 2009, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Perednik is a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Sino-Jewish Institute (United States). He is the founder of Programme Tian Enlightenment Programme in China and a visiting professor at Universidad ORT Uruguay.

Spektorowski is a professor of Political Theory and Comparative Politics at Tel Aviv University and Columbia University, serving as a visiting scholar under the auspices of the Israel Institute. He is a member of the International Contact Group. He is the author of numerous books. He is a visiting professor at Universidad ORT Uruguay.
