The GATT Uruguay Round was a major international trade negotiation that began with 92 countries in Punta del Este, Uruguay, in September 1986 and ended in 1994 in Marrakesh, with 123 signatory countries, marking the transition from the previous system to the World Trade Organization (WTO), which was established on January 1, 1995. Its significance is global, as it expanded the rules of world trade beyond goods and, for the first time, regulated trade in services and intellectual property, among other achievements.
