This workshop is based on Bernard Tschumi’s thesis, in which he argues that architecture is the “
” site of the conflict between form and function.

Physical space and human experience maintain a tense and ever-changing relationship that oscillates between indifference, reciprocity, and contradiction or conflict. Recognizing which of these elements is at work in a built structure is a critical act that reveals the ideological, cultural, and spatial tensions inherent in architecture.
We then recognized in Montevideo’s cultural fabric—composed of the works we visited during the workshop—a heterotopic condition that was already in effect.
Our work consisted of intensifying it by altering its programmes: imagining new events for its interiors, identifying the tensions between these events and the space of the buildings, and designing interventions that juxtapose seemingly incompatible settings in the same place.
The photographic record was the tool we used to identify the events taking place in space. It is the result of a project: a lens that decides—even before the framing—what deserves to be seen. The record is, therefore, a space for a project and, consequently, a tool to be mastered.
