Against the backdrop of an international context marked by political, economic, and strategic transformations, the conference will examine the evolution of relations among Japan, China, and South Korea, focusing on recent changes in government in the region and the new global landscape that has emerged following the start of Donald Trump’s second term. The conference will analyze the dynamics of cooperation and competition among these three key actors and their impact on the international order.
The event will be led by Dr. Shino Watanabe, who will share an academic perspective on Japan’s strategy for addressing regional and global challenges, as well as the future outlook for East Asia amid a context of increasing geopolitical realignment.

Dr. Shino WatanabeProfessor in the School of Global Studies at Sophia University (Japan). Her main research interests are Chinese foreign policy, international development finance, and East Asian international relations.
He earned his bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Tokyo (Japan), his master's degree in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School at Tufts University (United States), and his Ph.D. in international relations from the Woodrow Wilson School of Government at the University of Virginia (United States).
Previously, she served as a security studies fellow at the Research Institute for Peace and Security—Center for Global Partnership of the Japan Foundation from 2004 to 2006, a researcher at the Japan Institute of International Affairs from 2008 to 2010, an associate professor at Saitama University (Japan) from 2010 to 2014, an associate professor at Sophia University from 2014 to 2017, and a visiting scholar (Fulbright Fellow) at the Sigur Center for Asian Studies, Elliott School of International Affairs, The George Washington University (United States), from 2021 to 2022.
