One hundred years after the rise of European fascism, this conference analyzes the similarities and differences between historical fascism and contemporary populism.
- Date: Aug. 4, 2026 Time: 12:00 Location: Pocitos Campus - Hemicycle - 2633 España Blvd.
What similarities exist between historical fascism and contemporary populism? How do they differ? From a historical and political perspective, this lecture will analyze aspects such as charismatic leadership, the construction of the enemy, the weakening of democratic institutions, and the use of permanent crisis as a tool for political mobilization.
It will also address the fundamental differences between the two phenomena: while historical fascism was a totalitarian project aimed at replacing democracy, today’s populist movements, in most cases, operate within democratic systems, gradually straining and eroding their boundaries.
The event is part of the Department of International Studies' lecture series.
