Dr. Gérard Bensussan will address a central question in the philosophical tradition: What do we mean by Jewish philosophy?

Drawing on a survey of some of its key figures—from Philo of Alexandria and Maimonides to Mendelssohn, Hermann Cohen, Franz Rosenzweig, Martin Buber, and Emmanuel Levinas—Dr. Bensussan will propose that we consider Jewish philosophy not as a unified doctrine, but as a series of discontinuities and shifts that run through the history of thought.
Between the figure and the concept, between the particular and the universal, between transcendence and immanence, Jewish philosophy thus emerges as a constant inquiry into the very conditions of thought.

The event, organized by the Department of Jewish Studies at the University of the Republic ( Universidad ORT Uruguay), has , with the support of the Nisso Acher Chair in Judaism at the Catholic University of Uruguay and the Jewish-Christian Fellowship of Uruguay.

Dr. Gérard Bensussan
He is a philosopher, professor emeritus at the University of Strasbourg, and a researcher at the Husserl Archives in Paris at the École Normale Supérieure.
A specialist in classical German idealism and Jewish philosophy, he was one of the driving forces behind the founding of the Strasbourg Philosophers' Parliament.
A member of several research centers in France and abroad, his areas of work and research encompass, on the one hand, German philosophy and its relationship to German-language Jewish thought and, on the other hand, contemporary philosophy, particularly French philosophy.
He has translated works by Friedrich Wilhelm Schelling, Franz Rosenzweig, Ludwig Feuerbach, and Moses Hess into French. He is the author of several hundred articles published in French and international journals, as well as numerous books, some of which have been translated into German, Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
