The accelerating adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) systems in the manufacturing, service, and government sectors poses challenges that go beyond the technical realm. In this context, the Graduate School of Communication and Design is presenting, as part of Graduate Studies Week, the series of events “Technologies for a Possible Future”—a forum for understanding the social and cultural impact of AI and reflecting on how to approach it responsibly in the design and development of digital products.
In this session, the event aims to explore the relationship between artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and regulation, examining the process of building AI systems and the tensions that arise when they are implemented.
The panel will take the form of a discussion, during which participants will analyze the various stages of AI system development and the legal and regulatory challenges these systems face when deployed on digital platforms and services.
The event will also include presentations of real-life cases, which will allow participants to analyze specific situations and understand the challenges posed by the development and use of these technologies in different contexts.
The series brings together academic, institutional, and professional perspectives around four strategic themes: data and digital platforms; the fundamentals and tensions of responsible AI; the design of digital products with an ethical focus; and the construction of narratives about a technological future that offers an alternative to the present one.

Noelia BeltramelliSociologist with a master’s degree in Digital Society and Social Change from the University of Glasgow. She is currently a researcher in the “Responsible AI” research area at the Interdisciplinary Center for Data Science and Machine Learning at the University of the Republic.

Lorena, Engineer EtcheverryShe holds a degree in Computer Engineering and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from PEDECIBA-University of the Republic (Udelar). She is an Associate Professor (Grade 4) at the Institute of Computing in the School of Engineering, where she leads the GEMA (Data Management, Modeling, and Analysis) research group. She is a Level I Researcher in the National System of Researchers (SNI) and a Grade 4 researcher at PEDECIBA Computer Science. In 2023, she received the Roberto Caldeyro Barcia Award in the field of Computer Science. In addition, she coordinates the Master’s Program in Data Science and Machine Learning at FING and is a member of the Interdisciplinary Center for Data Science at UdelaR (CICADA.uy), where she coordinates the research area on Responsible Data Science. Her area of interest is data management. More recently, she has focused on ethical and privacy issues in data science, specifically on data anonymization and privacy-preserving analytical techniques, as well as the detection and mitigation of algorithmic biases.

Patricia Diaz CharqueroA lawyer with a master's degree in international relations who focuses on analyzing technology from a human rights perspective. She currently serves as president of DATA Uruguay and is the coordinator of its Data and Society Laboratory (Datysoc).

Moderator: Dr. Francisco ArriHe holds a Ph.D. in Social Communication from Austral University, a Master’s degree in Communication and Education from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Teaching from the University of Salvador; he is also a national radio broadcaster. has s an extensive academic and teaching career at universities in Argentina and Paraguay, where he held administrative and research positions. Professionally, he worked at Radio Mitre as a broadcaster, editor, reporter, and producer for the news service.
