Studying in Uruguay

Safety

Montevideo is a large city and is considered one of the safest capital cities in all of Latin America.

However, a few common-sense tips can help you avoid inconveniences or unpleasant situations:

  • Avoid traveling through the port area and the outskirts of the city, especially at night and alone.
  • Don't carry large amounts of cash with you; don't carry important personal documents.
  • When you arrive, you should make two copies of your identification documents, keep one in a safe place, and carry the other with you. You should also contact your consulate upon arrival.
  • Do not carry or display valuable items, especially when attending street fairs, shows, or events with large crowds, or when using public transportation. If you are carrying a backpack or purse, make sure to keep them in sight at all times.
  • It’s a good idea to store your valuables and important documents in a safe deposit box, as well as to plan your route and familiarize yourself with the available transportation options before setting out on a trip.
  • It's important to pay attention to the people around you.
  • Do not open the door to your home to strangers.

If you encounter any safety issues, you should contact law enforcement immediately.

It’s a good idea to memorize the police emergency number, 911—which can be dialed free of charge from any cell phone or pay phone—and to know the location of the police station that serves your area.
