Studying in Uruguay

Visas and Immigration

While you are studying in Uruguay, you may need a visa, although it is not required in some cases.

If you need a visa to enter Uruguay, you must apply for it in your home country. It is important to check with the nearest Uruguayan consulate before traveling.

Citizens of most countries in the Americas and Europe do not currently need a visa to enter Uruguay.

The required documentation for entry may be a passport or (for Mercosur citizens) a national identity card.

Stays of up to one year

For most nationalities, there is no special student visa in Uruguay; therefore, students enter the country as tourists (presenting only their passport).

Either of these situations allows you to reside legally in the country for 90 days.

Once this period has expired, the permit must be renewed at the National Immigration Office, located in Montevideo’s Old City (Misiones 1513, phone 2916 0471).

Stays longer than one year

Students from any country who are staying in Uruguay for more than one year must apply for temporary residency with the National Immigration Office.

The process requires the involvement of a notary public and the fulfillment of certain essential conditions for the filing to be approved.

The university's International Office can guide you through the process, but we recommend that you contact the Uruguayan consulate in your home country to find out about the procedure and the required documents before you travel.
