Universidad ORT Uruguay the 9th IEEE World Engineering Education Conference (EDUNINE 2025), IEEE Region 9’s flagship global event on engineering education. Held in Uruguay for the first time, the conference brought together leading experts from around the world to discuss the challenges and opportunities of engineering education in the era of generative artificial intelligence.
From March 22 to 26, Montevideo served as the meeting place for researchers, academics, university officials, and professionals from the tech industry who participated in EDUNINE 2025. The event, organized by the prestigious IEEE Education Society, was held for the first time in Uruguay and was hosted by the School of Engineering at Universidad ORT Uruguay.
Under the theme “Education in the Age of Generative AI: Embracing Digital Transformation,” the conference served as a forum for in-depth reflection on the impact that new technologies are having on the ways we teach and learn engineering.
The event was opened by Eduardo Mangarelli, dean of the School of Engineering, who presented “Enhancing Engineering Education: Integrating Generative AI Tools,” a discussion on the impact of artificial intelligence on engineering education and its professional applications.

The event was attended by more than 100 researchers from various countries, who shared their research, best practices, and experiences through presentations, panel discussions, and workshops. The diversity of approaches and the high quality of the papers presented reaffirmed the conference’s significance in the international academic community.

In addition to the lectures and academic presentations, the conference offered a culturally and experientially enriching program.
On Saturday, March 22, attendees enjoyed a tour of Montevideo, exploring its history and culture. They visited iconic landmarks such as the Montevideo Photography Center, the Rambla, the Solís Theater, and the Mercado del Puerto, during a day that showcased the local identity and fostered informal interaction among participants.
On Sunday, the 23rd, the focus was on virtual learning, with a series of online workshops on education and technology. Topics covered included the use of chatbots in the classroom, teaching engineering for peace, and the application of artificial intelligence in educational transformation processes.
These activities expanded the scope of the event, encouraging active participation from the global community and fostering new perspectives on the role of engineering in society.
In addition, keynote speeches were delivered by international guests, who offered strategic insights into how educational institutions can lead the digital transformation without losing sight of the human and ethical development of future professionals.
ORT, Innovation, and Academic Leadership
The fact that Universidad ORT Uruguay been selected to host this edition of EDUNINE is a testament to the institution’s academic leadership in the region. In recent years, ORT has actively promoted the updating of its curricula, the integration of new technologies into the classroom, and teacher training in digital skills.
The local academic community actively participated in the event, forging ties with international researchers and laying the groundwork for new collaborations in research, development, and educational innovation.
