The event took place from Friday, January 24, to Sunday, January 26, and brought together 68 people who, divided into 11 groups, developed games over the course of 48 hours—from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon—based on the theme of bubbles

The event was organized as a hackathon, a type of activity in which a group of people come together for a set period of time to develop a project. The term is a combination of the word “hack,” referring to a creative solution, and “marathon,” referring to the duration of the event.

The games were developed in a variety of genres, including action, platform, puzzle, and narrative adventure games, among others.

During the game’s development, participants received support from mentors and industry professionals, including Matías Sniadower—an ORT instructor—and Leandro Mesquita, both from JamCity; Juan Forno and Juan Pedro Salvo from Manada; Gerson Da Silva from Ironhide; and Ariel Copes, also an ORT instructor.

At the end of the workshop, each group presented its game to the rest of the participants to receive questions and feedback on their work.

What is the Global Game Jam?

It is an event in which participants form teams to create games based on a theme that changes every year. Launched in 2008 in California, United States, it is now held at multiple locations around the world

“The main thing about the Global Game Jam—and what it brings to the gaming industry wherever it’s held—is new talent. It brings people into a world that’s extremely closed off and difficult to break into on their own,” explained Juan Rodríguez, founder of Jam2Jam, a professor at ORT, and one of the event’s organizers.

According to official data from the Global Game Jam website, in 2024 the event took place at 796 venues across 102 countries, with more than 35,000 participants creating a total of 9,964 games.

This year, Montevideo was one of the host cities in Latin America, along with Mar Plata and Mendoza (Argentina), and Bogotá and Cali (Colombia).

The games from this edition, as well as those from previous editions, are available on the official website of Global Game Jam
