Chevening is a global scholarship program funded by the British government that enables professionals with leadership potential to pursue a master’s degree at more than 150 universities in the United Kingdom.
Every year, more than 160 countries, including Uruguay, take part in this initiative.
These scholarships are intended for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree and have at least two years of work experience.
The program is looking for applicants who demonstrate leadership skills and a commitment to making a positive impact in their home countries.
The ORT Scholars' Experience
The event featured representatives from the British Embassy and three ORT graduates who were selected as Chevening scholars for the 2023–2024 academic year. They shared advice on the application process, which includes writing four short essays and participating in a personal interview.
Paula Lago, who earned a master’s degree in Narratives of the Future: Art, Data, and Society at the University of Edinburgh, reflected on her experience:
Those responsible for selecting scholarship recipients look for candidates who have clear goals and a vision of how this master’s degree will serve as a catalyst for the future I envision for myself and for contributing to my country.
Also participating were Gastón Bernheim, a graduate of the Master’s program in Economic Policy for International Development at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and María Paz Núñez, who completed a Master’s degree in Pharmacology at the University of Oxford. Both noted that the scholarship allowed them to devote themselves fully to their studies, enriching them both personally and professionally.
Natalia Correa, Head of Communications, Political Affairs, and the Chevening Program at the British Embassy, emphasized:
“Chevening Scholarships offer a well-rounded experience that includes much more than just a master’s degree. There are events, seminars, trips, volunteer opportunities, and professional opportunities in the United Kingdom.”

On August 20, a second gathering was held at the residence of British Ambassador Malcolm Green to bid farewell to the scholarship recipients selected for the 2025–2026 academic year, who will travel to the United Kingdom in September.
The event paid special tribute to Federico Martínez, an ORT graduate who was selected as one of this year’s 10 Uruguayan scholarship recipients. He will be pursuing an MBA at Cranfield University.
