*"Generations," a work by Fabián Barros created using artificial intelligence, in collaboration with Pedro Corso for the collective La Reconquista*

The publication, produced by the Office of Language Policy, is presented in booklet format and is intended for elementary and middle school students. This resource is available free of charge online to all students in Uruguay.

One of the key topics addressed by the government agency in the publication is art, with a particular emphasis on the importance of students learning about and becoming familiar with contemporary artists.

About the article

The article, written in late 2021, begins with a reflection on Uruguay, which, despite having an aging and shrinking population, continues to stand out for producing a large number of athletes and artists

However, one of the main challenges facing the arts sector is its limited audience and widespread lack of interest—factors that have contributed to the persistence of the notion that “nothing ever happens in Uruguay,” a perception that does not reflect the richness and diversity of the country’s cultural output.

In this context, technological advances and hyperconnectivity have opened up new opportunities for Uruguayan artists, providing them with the tools to develop their professional careers and gain access to international stages.

However, beyond these possibilities, the article emphasizes the importance of strengthening support for national art by promoting its recognition and appreciation. Engaging with, reflecting on, and experiencing the works of contemporary artists is essential to the development of cultural identity, both individually and collectively.

The text presents a selection of 20 national artists, highlighting and describing their works. Among them are Leticia Almeida (Tanky),Mathías Chumino (C03RA),Josefina De León,Santiago Velazco,Mago Hart,Liliana Farber, Santiago Paulós, and Fabián Barros, currently the academic coordinator of the Bachelor’s Degree in Design, Art, and Technology at the School of Design.
