On August 21, the Universidad ORT Uruguay School of Business Universidad ORT Uruguay a conference titled “Artificial Intelligence and Accounting: A Journey Toward Innovation” at the Pocitos Campus.
The event was part of the Management and Business Lecture Series, which brings together industry leaders to discuss the current challenges facing the business world.
AI as a Strategic Partner in Decision-Making
During the opening remarks, Ernesto Scayola, manager and consulting partner at EY Uruguay, explained that the purpose of the talk was not to address artificial intelligence from a technical perspective, but rather to understand its real-world implications in areas such as management, accounting, and finance.
“AI can provide answers with overwhelming confidence, but it can also make mistakes. That’s why it’s essential to review the information, understand the risks, and always have a clear use case in mind,” Scayola emphasized.
Implementing technology just for the sake of it isn't the solution: it must address a specific need or business objective.

The expert emphasized the importance of approaching the adoption of artificial intelligence from multiple angles: strategy, governance, data, technological infrastructure, risks, compliance, and human talent.
“Every organization should be considering how to train and educate its teams in AI,” he concluded.
From data to knowledge: the role of intelligent learning
For her part, Mónica Restuccia, a consulting manager at EY Uruguay, focused her presentation on the potential of AI to generate and update knowledge within companies.

Restuccia compared training an artificial intelligence model to the process of onboarding a new employee: “If I give it outdated or incorrect policies to read, it will learn incorrectly. That’s why curating information is essential before implementing these types of tools.”
He also demonstrated how models like GPT can be used on a daily basis to draft business documents and adjust the tone to suit the situation.
“Usability depends on our needs at any given time,” he said, emphasizing the importance of aligning each technological application with the organization’s overall strategy.
Innovating with a Purpose
The conference concluded with a call to reflect on the risks, opportunities, and responsibilities involved in integrating artificial intelligence into professional settings.
Both speakers agreed that technological innovation must always be guided by a clear and ethical purpose, in line with each institution’s objectives.
