The event, held on August 26 via Zoom, brought together international researchers and experts to discuss the impact of populism on democracy, governance, and regional integration processes, and was attended by students, graduates, academics, civil society representatives, and stakeholders involved in public policy design.

The first panel addressed populism in Europe and its relationship to the project of supranational integration, analyzing the political, institutional, and social tensions currently affecting the European Union. The session was moderated by Germán Clulow (Universidad ORT Uruguay) and featured presentations by Fabián Daniel Wajner (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) and Diego Hernández Nilson (University of the Republic).

The second session focused on Latin American populism and its connection to the crisis of representative democracy, exploring whether these phenomena are a cause or a consequence of the region’s current political challenges. Participants in this panel included Constanza Mazzina (UCEMA) and Camilo López (University of the Republic), with Clulow also serving as moderator.

Throughout the day, the discussion provided an opportunity to compare theoretical perspectives with case studies, highlighting similarities and differences in the emergence and consolidation of populist leadership in Europe and Latin America, as well as their impact on democratic institutions.
