The digital revolution has not only changed how students learn, but also how teachers are trained and develop professionally.
In their new book, Dr. Denise Vaillant—dean of the Institute of Education at Universidad ORT Uruguayand Dr. Carlos Marcelo—professor of Teaching Methods and School Administration at the University of Seville (Spain)—offer an in-depth analysis of the current challenges facing teacher education in Latin America.
“What does professional development for teachers mean in an interconnected world? What do teachers need to know, and how can they acquire these essential skills? What does the future hold at the intersection of digitalization, social media, artificial intelligence, and professional development for teachers?” These are some of the questions the authors explore throughout the book.
The book, edited by Grupo Magro and published in 2025, is divided into eight chapters. Teacher Professional Development in the Digital Age: A Path to Learning, in particular, traces a historical overview of teacher professional development and analyzes emerging trends in digital education. It also addresses key topics such as personalized learning, educational influencers, and ethics in the use of social media.
One of the book’s central themes is the need to train digitally competent teachers who are capable of “positively influencing the learning experiences of children, youth, and adults.” Vaillant and Marcelo emphasize that it is not merely a matter of incorporating technology into the classroom, but of transforming teaching practices so that they facilitate learning experiences that would be impossible without it.
“Today, it is important to learn and teach using digital tools, but also to go beyond simply adapting pre-established teaching approaches,” the authors argue, calling for a rethinking of initial teacher training, the transition into the teaching profession, and professional development through the lens of innovation.
Drawing on examples that examine changes in Ibero-American education systems, *Teacher Professional Development in the Digital Age: A Path to Learning* offers essential tools for those who believe that the future of education depends on teachers who are prepared for a world in constant flux.
