The Executive Committee of the Club de Madrid is an organization that promotes democracy and is composed of several former heads of state.
Dr. Julio María Sanguinetti, a member of the aforementioned committee, participated on behalf of Uruguay from the videoconferencing room at Universidad ORT Uruguay, a member institution of the World Bank’s Global Development Learning Network (GDLN).
The former president of Uruguay was welcomed by the Director General, Prof. Charlotte de Grünberg; the Dean of Academic Development, Julio Fernández, M.Sc.; and the Academic Secretary of the School of Management and Social Sciences, Jaime Damiani, C.A.
Other former heads of state participating
The following individuals participated in the Club of Madrid Executive Committee’s videoconference from the United Nations headquarters in New York:
- Kim Campbell, former Prime Minister of Canada;
- Fernando Henrique Cardoso, former president of Brazil;
- César Gaviria, former president of Colombia and of the OAS;
- Valentín Paniagua, former president of Peru;
- Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland;
- Ernesto Zedillo, former president of Mexico.
For his part, former Costa Rican President José María Figueres participated via audio link from Rome.
All of these locations were connected to the World Bank’s multipoint videoconferencing bridge in Washington, D.C.
