Dr. Néstor Gandelman: Founding Fellow of the Royal Economic Society

May 23, 2025
The faculty's associate dean for research, Dr. Néstor Gandelman, has been named a fellow of the Royal Economic Society, one of the world's most prestigious academic associations in economics.

With more than 4,000 members in over 70 countries, the Royal Economic Society (RES) has promoted the study and dissemination of economic thought internationally since its founding in 1890 in the United Kingdom.

In the list of founding fellows released by RES, Gandelman is the only Uruguayan to be recognized. The selection process is overseen by a committee of experts chaired by economist Christóforos Pissarídis, winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Economics.

The appointment as a fellow is an honor reserved for economists with an outstanding academic and research record.

Applications for membership opened in December 2024 and closed in February of this year. Gandelman’s election was notable:

  • a significant contribution to the advancement of the field through original research;
  • a meaningful contribution to the training, development, or mentoring of the next generation of economists;
  • a meaningful contribution to the public's understanding of the economy.

In this interview, Dr. Gandelman—who recently assumed the role of associate dean for research at the school—reflects on the significance and scope of this recognition.
