Book Presentation : The Past, Present, and Future of the Montevideo 300 Plan

As part of the commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of Montevideo, this publication offers a comprehensive overview of the planning process for the capital city.

It highlights the environmental, social, economic, and cultural changes that have taken place since the Montevideo Plan was first adopted in 1998 and its revision in 2013, which led to the current Departmental Guidelines for Land Use Planning and Sustainable Development.

The book also explores the emerging challenges and needs currently facing the city, projecting possible future scenarios from an integrative perspective. The main objective of the book is to provide a critical and reflective perspective on territorial planning, bringing together diverse contributions and experiences.

It compiles reflections from national and international stakeholders and institutions, as well as from former mayors who participated in the implementation and development of the Montevideo Plan over the past 25 years. The publication was edited and printed with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)The event is part of a broader process of reflection and debate promoted by the Municipality of Montevideo under the name Plan Montevideo 300, which seeks to develop a comprehensive perspective on recent changes in the city and anticipate its future challenges.

In recent years, this process has included various activities, such as thematic meetings on urban economics, heritage, climate change resilience, green infrastructure, and social inclusion, as well as interviews and forums for dialogue with experts, academic leaders, civil society organizations, and representatives from the private sector.

This publication is one of three planned by the City Government as part of the Montevideo 300 Plan. The first of these, titled Conversations Toward the Montevideo 300 Plan, was published in December 2024 and compiles reports from thematic meetings held during that year. The remaining publications, titled Past, Present, and Future of the Montevideo 300 Plan and Proposals for the Plan, will be edited and published in 2025. They will cover the remaining activities mentioned that were carried out as part of this process.

The book launch Past, Present, and Future of the Montevideo 300 Plan provides a valuable opportunity for the academic community of the School of Architecture to engage with the urban planning process from an interdisciplinary and up-to-date perspective.
