As part of the series, organized by El Observador and the Universidad ORT Uruguay School of Business, María Noel Durán spoke with both experts about the challenges leaders face in a context marked by uncertainty, technological transformation, and changing expectations among younger generations.
Fernández, PhD, is a professor of Leadership and Organizational Behavior at Universidad ORT Uruguay, and Gordín, who has master’s degree in marketing and a master’s degree in coaching and NLP, is a professor of Interpersonal Skills at the Business School.
Both noted that leadership no longer depends solely on a hierarchical position, but rather on the ability to influence others, build trust, and rally teams toward a common purpose.
They emphasized the importance of developing skills such as empathy, authenticity, active listening, and emotional intelligence to build more effective working relationships.
New Challenges for Leaders
In an environment of constant change, they agreed that leadership involves adapting, continuously learning, and preparing to manage complex conversations, support transformation processes, and foster people’s talent. They also emphasized that these skills can be developed through training and practice.
It is possible to learn new ways of interacting with people and, in this way, contribute to both team growth and organizational performance.
