UNITA brings together universities from seven European countries —Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Romania, Switzerland, and Ukraine—located mainly in Romance-language regions and border or mountain areas.
Its objective is to promote new forms of academic cooperation, linguistic diversity, and sustainable development in the territories where its member universities operate, in line with the construction of the European Higher Education Area.
GEMINAE Network
GEMINAE is the network of non-European universities associated with UNITA. It is a program that establishes a network of "sister universities" in countries outside the European Union, with an emphasis on Romance-language regions.
Its purpose is to share best practices in training, research, innovation, and community outreach, as well as to facilitate the mobility of students, teachers, and researchers among participating institutions, according to information published by the UNITA alliance.
Through this membership, Universidad ORT Uruguay can access the UNITA Alliance university network to develop new partnerships, participate in mobility calls, joint programmes and research and innovation projects, and integrate into academic activities and thematic networks.
This opens up additional opportunities for students and teachers to participate in international experiences at European institutions with similar academic profiles.
The acceptance was formalized by Dr. Ramón Gonzalo, rector the Public University of Navarra, an institution that chairs UNITA’s Governance Board and has maintained an academic partnership with Universidad ORT Uruguay several years, based on exchange agreements and specific partnerships between the two universities.
Recognition and internationalization
Joining GEMINAE is further recognition of the academic quality and internationalization policy of Universidad ORT Uruguay.
The university is already part of networks such as the International Association of Universities (IAU), the Union of Latin American Universities (UDUAL), and the Ibero-American Association of Postgraduate Universities (AUIP), and promotes student mobility through programmes like Erasmus+.
In this context, membership in GEMINAE reinforces the position of Universidad ORT Uruguay a bridge between Uruguay and the world, expanding the possibilities for its academic community to participate in educational experiences, collaborative research projects, and international thematic networks coordinated with the UNITA Alliance.
