Universidad ORT Uruguay accepted as a member of the international GEMINAE network

The membership, which took effect on January 1, 2026, brings Universidad ORT Uruguay the network of institutions affiliated with UNITA – Universitas Montium, an alliance of European universities established in 2020 as part of the “European Universities” initiative under the European Commission’s Erasmus+ program.

GEMINAE International Network

UNITA brings together universities from seven European countries —Portugal, France, Italy, Spain, Romania, Switzerland, and Ukraine—most of which are located in Romance-speaking regions and in border or mountainous areas.

Its goal is to promote new forms of academic cooperation, linguistic diversity, and the sustainable development of the regions where its member universities are located, in line with the development of the European Higher Education Area.

GEMINAE Network

GEMINAE is the network of non-European universities affiliated with UNITA. It is a program that establishes a network of “sister universities” in countries outside the European Union, with a focus on Romance-speaking regions.

Its purpose is to share best practices in education, research, innovation, and engagement with society, as well as to facilitate the mobility of students, faculty, and researchers among participating institutions, according to information published by the UNITA alliance.

Through this membership, Universidad ORT Uruguay access the UNITA Alliance’s network of universities to develop new partnerships, participate in mobility calls, programmes , and research and innovation projects, and engage in academic activities and thematic networks.

This opens up additional opportunities for students and faculty to participate in international experiences at European institutions with similar academic profiles.

The acceptance was formalized by Dr. Ramón Gonzalo, rector the Public University of Navarra, an institution that chairs UNITA’s Governance Board and has maintained an academic partnership with Universidad ORT Uruguay several years, based on exchange agreements and specific agreements between the two universities.

Recognition and Internationalization

Joining GEMINAE represents further recognition of the academic quality and internationalization policy of Universidad ORT Uruguay.

The university is already a member of networks such as the International Association of Universities (IAU), the Union of Latin American Universities (UDUAL), and the Ibero-American Association of Graduate Universities (AUIP), and promotes student mobility through programmes Erasmus+.
