The Latin American Landscape Architecture Seminar aims to promote current trends in landscape architecture in Latin America, as well as the movements, approaches, and challenges that characterize contemporary practice in the region.
The event will take place in the Auditorium of the Universidad ORT Uruguay Business School, located at 919 Luis de la Torre. It is aimed at professionals in the landscaping field and the general public interested in the topic.
Generation R: New Approaches to Thinking About the Landscape
This fifth edition takes as its starting point the publication Landscape Architects of the Americas: GENERATION R, Regenerating Perspectives/Regenerating Landscapes (2025), by IFLA Americas, conceived and curated by Argentine architect Jimena Martignoni.

The book brings together 42 landscape studies from 11 countries on the continent and presents projects developed on different scales, in different territories, and within various contexts in response to environmental, cultural, and social challenges. According to the publication’s premise, the “R” in Generación R does not represent only the concept of regeneration. It also encompasses actions such as rehabilitating, rebuilding, revaluing, reeducating, repairing, and revolutionizing.
These ideas express a way of understanding the landscape as an active tool for responding to increasingly complex and changing environmental scenarios. Building on this premise, the seminar aims to to reflect on how territories are designed, inhabited, and transformed, how local ways of living are incorporated, how ecosystems are conserved and restored and what actions can inspire new generations to protect and value the landscape.
Among the works included in the book is Mariposas Salvajes, a project by Architect and Psychologist Paula Rial—academic coordinator of the Landscape Design Technician program at ORT and a speaker at the seminar—developed in Montevideo that connects native vegetation, butterfly migration, biodiversity, public space, and citizen participation.

Experiences from Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay
The program will provide insights into different approaches to landscape design through experiences from Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. The participants’ professional backgrounds span curation and outreach related to the Latin American landscape, public space design, environmental restoration, gardens, biodiversity, and ecosystem conservation.
Jimena Martignoni, from Argentina, is an architect, author, and curator of architecture, urban, and landscape projects in Latin America. has graduate has in Landscape Planning from the University of Buenos Aires and in Environment, Economy, and Society from FLACSO. She is the curator and editor of the publication that serves as the starting point for this issue.
Paula Livingstone, from Chile, holds a degree in architecture from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of British Columbia. She is a founding partner of J&L Arquitectura Paisaje, a firm dedicated to the design of public spaces, green infrastructure, environmental restoration, and territorial projects.
Ernestina Anchorena, from Argentina, specializes in the design of gardens, parks, and open spaces. Her work connects vegetation and the landscape with the identity of places, biodiversity, and the relationship between nature and culture.
Paula Rial, from Uruguay, is a landscape architect, director of Estudio Paula Rial Paisajismo, and academic coordinator of the Landscape Design Technician program at Universidad ORT Uruguay in Universidad ORT Uruguay. has than twenty years of professional experience and runs a practice that integrates landscape, architecture, art, and sustainability, with a special focus on native flora.
Dr. Dr. Gabriela Bentancur Viglione, from Uruguay, is an entomologist, a researcher at PEDECIBA, and a university professor. has than twenty years of experience in research, teaching, and training, with work focusing on biodiversity, the geographic distribution of species, and ecosystem conservation, particularly as they relate to the lepidoptera of the Southern Cone.
Schedule for the 2026 Latin American Landscape Architecture Seminar
The event will be organized according to the following schedule:
- 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.: Introduction by Paula Rial.
- 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.: Presentation by Jimena Martignoni.
- 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Presentation by Paula Livingstone of J&L Arquitectura Paisaje.
- 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.: Picnic in the courtyard; please bring something to share.
- 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.: Presentation by Ernestina Anchorena, Psj.
- 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.: Presentation by Paula Rial and Dr. Gabriela Bentancur Viglione.
- 4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.: Roundtable discussion, exchange with the speakers, and Q&A session.
Format, Cost, and Registration
The seminar will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the Hemiciclo at the Universidad ORT Uruguay School of Business, located at 919 Luis de la Torre. The format will be hybrid: participants may attend in person or via Zoom.
The cost is a fee of 4,420 URU. Registration is now open, and the university offers discounts; the applicable conditions can be found on the official website of the Latin American Landscape Architecture Seminar.
Once the event is over, participants will have access to the full digital version of the book , which serves as the starting point for this fifth edition.
