The U.S. Embassy in Uruguay has opened applications for SUSI 2027, a five-week intensive academic program that combines training in entrepreneurship and economic development with leadership skills development.The program will be conducted entirely in English, from January 16 to February 20, 2027, and will be headquartered at the Institute for Training and Development (ITD), in Amherst, Massachusetts. The U.S. Department of State will cover all of participation.
Who is eligible to apply for SUSI 2027?
Students students who are in their first through third year at universities or other institutions of higher education in Uruguay.
To participate, you must:
- Be between the ages of 18 and 25.
- Have at least one semester of coursework remaining upon completion of the program and commit to returning to your educational institution.
- Have a good command of English, sufficient to fully participate in academic activities.
- Demonstrate strong academic performance and leadership potential.
- Involve the community and offer extracurricular activities.
- Have an interest in entrepreneurship, economic development, and learning more about the United States.
The interviews with candidates will be conducted in English. Priority will be given to those with little or no prior experience studying or traveling in the United States or other countries outside of Uruguay.
Employees of the U.S. government—including embassies, consulates, or other government entities—or of the Fulbright Commission, as well as their immediate family members, are not eligible.

What will the SUSI 2027 program be like?
SUSI 2027 will bring together 20 college students from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay.
The five-week program will combine a four-week academic residency with a one-week academic field experience. The program will include classes, lectures, seminars, workshops, visits to institutions and historical and natural sites, cultural activities, and community service opportunities.
The itinerary may include trips to Boston and New York, as well as academic field trips to Denver, Colorado, and Washington, D.C. Destinations and activities are subject to change.
How do I apply?
Applications are submitted via a form that must be completed in English. The application includes personal and academic information, written essays, and a one-minute video.
Once the applications have been reviewed, the U.S. Embassy will shortlist up to 15 candidates for an interview in English. From that group, five primary candidates and two alternates will be selected. The Embassy will announce the final selection in November 2026.
The deadline for submitting applications is Sunday, October 4, 2026, at 11:59 p.m..
