InMediaciones de la Comunicación is indexed in Web of Science

The magazine InMediaciones de la Comunicación, published by the School of Communication at Universidad ORT Uruguay, was recentlyaccepted into theEmerging Sources Citation Index(ESCI) collection ofWeb of Science(WOS), one of the most prestigious academic databases worldwide.

This recognition marks a key step in the internationalization of a publication that, since 1998, has been promoting the dissemination of original research, essays, and interviews in the fields of communication and the humanities

A rigorous evaluation process

The indexing was the result of an extensive editorial process that involved meeting rigorous international standards.

Lautaro Cossia, the journal’s editor-in-chief, explained that the application was submitted in August 2024 and that the evaluation was conducted by Clarivate, the company behind WOS. Following ananalysis of editorial, technical, and visibilityfactors, the journal was accepted in September 2025

According to Cossia, this process involved a thorough examination of multiple aspects:

The journal was accepted into the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) in September 2025. This is a section of Web of Science (WOS) dedicated to emerging journals that show potential for inclusion in impact-factor-based indexes in the future.

To achieve this indexing, the publication had to demonstrate well-established editorial practices that are in line with international standards.

According to Cossia, “to be included in WOS (ESCI), the journal had to meet certain criteria, such as peer review, clear ethical policies, regular publication, international citation standards, geographic diversity on the editorial board, and a digital presence with identifiers such as a DOI. The ESCI section also evaluates the journal’s potential for growth and impact within its field.”

Recognition for a long and distinguished career

This achievement is no accident: it is the result of systematic work carried out over more than two decades.

ESCI's acceptance is a recognition of the editorial policy that Universidad ORT Uruguay has been promoting for years, which has required a commitment to enhancing the publication's professionalism. It is a collective achievement that has led to the consolidation of editorial processes and content.

The journal has maintained an editorial policy consistent with international standards, ensuring the academic quality of its content and its relevance to the contemporary debate on communication.

Greater international visibility and future prospects

Inclusion in ESCI represents a significant expansion of the journal's scope.

As part of theWeb of Science Core Collection, the articles become available on a platform used by researchers and reviewers around the world.

Cossia emphasized that this addition "makes it easier for published articles to be discovered, read, and potentially cited by a broader academic community. At the same time, it requires us to continue building on our achievements and expanding the journal’s reach so that it can reach researchers, faculty, students, and others interested in reflecting on communication phenomena."

Benefits for authors and readers

Indexing in WOS offers significant opportunities for both publishers and readers of the journal.

As Cossia explained,“Authors benefit from publishing in a journal recognized internationally in a database such as WOS, which can helpthem increase the reach of their articles and support them in academic evaluation processes. For their part, readers gain access to publications validated by a rigorous editorial process, which guarantees their quality and the dissemination of research that opens up new avenues of knowledge in the field of communication.”

The journal has established itself as a leading platform for the production and dissemination of academic knowledge in the field of communication in Ibero-America.

Publishing Challenges in a New Era

Indexing also presents new challenges. Maintaining the standards required by Clarivate and striving for collections with an impact factor will require a sustained effort toward continuous improvement.

Cossia sums it up this way: “One of the main challenges is maintaining the standards required by Clarivate to retain our indexing in ESCI and aim for inclusion in other collections with an impact factor. This involves continuing to improve the quality of published materials, further internationalizing our content, and promoting the open circulation of research that meets the standards of academic journals.”
