Universidad ORT Uruguay the National Kangaroo Challenge, a competition that is part of the International Kangaroo Maths Competition.

The International Mathematical Kangaroo Competition is a contest that challenges students from around the world with logic and math problems.

Globally, the competition takes place in multiple countries and has more than eight million students. In Uruguay, the event was organized by the Uruguayan Mathematics Association (Com-Partida).

The event brought together young people from various regions of the country, who put their skills to the test by solving math problems.

The driving force behind mathematics in Uruguay

The Com-Partida de Matemática organization in Uruguay is the main driving force behind this event and the advancement of mathematics in the country.

Com-Partida de Matemática del Uruguay is an educational initiative that was launched in 1992 thanks to the efforts of a small group of teachers who viewed problem-solving as the most important tool for learning mathematics.

The competition fosters analytical thinking and skills among young people, thereby encouraging their interest in science and technology.

Year after year, this organization hosts events and competitions across the country, including the National Math Olympiad.

On that occasion, Prof. Nelson Chocca, director of the Mathematics Department, thanked ORT for its support and welcomed everyone to the tournament.

What is the National Kangaroo Challenge?

This challenge is a competition in which elementary and middle school students tackle a variety of math problems tailored to their grade level.

In Uruguay, the competition is held at six different grade levels, ensuring that the challenges are appropriate for each stage of academic education.

  1. Preschool Level: students enrolled in the 5th grade of Integrated Basic Education (EBI).
  2. Grade Level: Students in the 6th grade of EBI.
  3. Benjamín Level: students in 7th grade of EBI.
  4. Junior Level: students in the 8th grade of EBI.
  5. Junior Level: students enrolled in 9th grade of EBI or 1st grade of Upper Secondary Education (EMS).
  6. Student Level: students in the 2nd or 3rd grade of high school.

The problems for each level are selected from the Annual Meeting of the International Kangaroo Committee.

At this meeting, it was agreed to create a total of 24 or 30 multiple-choice questions. Each question has five answer choices, only one of which is correct.
