Currently, there are two public universities in Uruguay: the University of the Republic (Udelar) and the Technological University (UTEC).

Each one has its own unique characteristics, but all offer undergraduate and graduate programs. All are accredited by the Ministry of Education and Culture (MEC), the government agency that regulates all matters related to education, and their academic programs are recognized as such. Montevideo is undoubtedly the place where most university degree programs in Uruguay are offered—especially in-person. However, there are an increasing number of options in the rest of the country: Maldonado, Paysandú, Salto, and Río Negro are some of the departments that offer university programs outside the capital.
