Bus
Public transportation in Montevideo consists of a network of bus routes that covers the entire city.
If you plan to use public transportation, we recommend that you visit the Montevideo City Government’s website How to Get There, which can be very helpful when planning a route.
Bus service is very limited between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., so it's best to take a taxi during those hours to avoid long waits.
For this trip, we recommend that you bring the exact amount or pay with a bill no larger than 200 Uruguayan pesos.
The ticket price is listed in the " Cost of Living" section.
Students at private universities are not eligible for student discounts on public transportation.
Taxis
Taxis are white and yellow. You can hail one on the street or call for one by phone at no extra charge.
Phone numbers for ordering taxis:
- Radio taxi: 141
- Celeritas: 1919
Taxi rides have a fixed starting fare (the initial charge) and the price increases based on the distance traveled. It’s also important to note that there are surcharges during nighttime hours, as well as on Sundays and holidays.
Uber
In addition to traditional taxis, you can also use ride-hailing apps like Uber in Montevideo.
The service operates throughout the city and allows users to request a ride from their mobile phone, see the estimated fare before starting the trip, and pay by card or through the app.
This service is often a practical alternative, especially at night or when taxis aren't available.
