The second edition of the workshop “The Learning Team – Difficult Conversations” was held on April 20 and 21 at the new ORT Business School building.

The activity was part of the internal training series organized by People, an initiative of the Human Resources Department at Universidad ORT Uruguay. On this occasion, two new groups of middle managers from the institution participated.

The workshop was led by Juan Carro, an engineer and consultant in organizational development and change management, with experience in leadership, communication, customer service, and psychological safety in teams.

Carro holds a degree in Biochemical Engineering with a focus on Food Processing from the Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico), a bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the Autonomous University of Querétaro (Mexico), has master’s has in Human Potential Development with a specialization in Organizations from the Instituto Desafío Celaya A. C. (Mexico).

Key Conversations

The proposal addressed a central aspect of day-to-day work: the ability to have difficult conversations without losing sight of relationships, shared goals, or the responsibilities of each role.

Within teams, these types of conversations typically arise when it is necessary to address differences, review expectations, set priorities, or make decisions that require clarity and active listening.

For this reason, the workshop proposed tools for recognizing these moments, preparing for them more effectively, and navigating them more mindfully, with a focus on building consensus and improving internal coordination.

The Facilitator's Perspective

Carro's background made it possible to frame the workshop from a perspective linked to human and organizational development.

In addition to his experience as a consultant, his educational background includes a degree in clinical psychology from the Autonomous University of Querétaro and graduate-level training in human development with a specialization in organizations, according to the information provided.

That journey provided a perspective focused on people, relationships, and the conditions that enable teams to learn from their own practices.

Learning Teams

In addition to working on individual skills, the activity focused on group dynamics. Team management does not depend solely on formal roles, but also on the quality of the interactions that enable learning, correction, agreement, and progress.

From that perspective, the workshop sought to strengthen the communication and leadership skills of staff members with coordination or leadership responsibilities within the university.

The initiative also provided an opportunity to continue an internal effort aimed at fostering more collaborative teams, capable of reviewing their practices and maintaining work methods aligned with institutional goals.
