The event was organized by People, an initiative of the university's Human Resources Department, and took place on June 19 at the Downtown Campus.
The session was led by Patricia De León, M.Sc., Web Development Coordinator at Universidad ORT Uruguay, who presented a theoretical and practical approach to the relationship between accessibility and sustainability.
Starting point
The workshop aimed to create a space for training and raising awareness about accessibility, understood as a key factor in identifying barriers and reviewing institutional practices.
This approach made it possible to focus on the importance of designing experiences, services, and environments that better accommodate the diversity of needs, backgrounds, and forms of participation within university life.
Rather than providing definitive answers, the activity served as an initial opportunity to organize concepts, share perspectives, and foster a more mindful approach to the challenges involved in moving toward more inclusive educational environments.
A Sustainable Perspective
The proposal also linked accessibility to sustainability, not only from an environmental perspective, but also from social and institutional perspectives.
In this regard, the workshop noted that the sustainability of an educational organization is also reflected in its ability to recognize different realities, anticipate obstacles, and foster conditions that promote broader participation among the members of its community.
This approach aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals, an agenda adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to address global challenges such as education, equality, sustainability, and partnerships by 2030.
In particular, this issue relates to SDG 4: Quality Education, which promotes inclusive and equitable education, and to SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, in that accessibility helps identify barriers that may limit the participation of different people.
Institutional Work
The workshop is part of the initiatives promoted by People, which, through the Human Resources Department, supports initiatives related to the development, well-being, and experience of the people who are part of Universidad ORT Uruguay.
In this context, the initiative helped spark an institutional dialogue on accessibility and sustainability, with a focus on training, raising awareness, and the gradual development of shared criteria.
